Contrary to what you might believe, watching cartoons does not count as culture – no matter how well drawn they are. Before you roll your eyes, think about what art really is – a chance to look or to experience something beautiful. That doesn’t sound so bad, does it? And while you may never make it to a ballet or sculpt something out of marble, the Jacksonville art scene has something to offer you. Who knows? You might just like the culture that rubs off on you.
Looking at the Arts
The first thing that pops into most people’s minds when they hear the world ‘art’ is a painting. Or high end photographs. You probably think of things which you can see and examine for their beauty. If this sounds like some art you might be able to appreciate, you’re in luck. Jacksonville has a number of museums and places of culture where you can immerse yourself in other people’s hard work – and maybe even like it. The Museum of Contemporary Art is the first place most people go in Jacksonville. But if you're looking for art that’s not striking, this is not the place for you. This museum is hip and the perfect arena for a date that seems like they need to be impressed by more than just your ability to chug down margaritas.
The Cummer Museum of Art and Gardens is another tasteful place for a group of friends who are interested in doing something a bit more sedate. But the Lavilla Museum and the Museum of Science and History are also stops you might want to make on your cultural tour of Jacksonville.
Experiencing Culture from a Comfortable Seat
Want to look at more than just boring paintings and pictures? Head out to the Florida Theatre where you can see dance performances. In the past, the theatre has hosted Flamenco dancers as well as dancers from Asia. Go to the Alhambra Dinner Theatre for a play and a meal – a great way to spend a night with someone special – or someone not so special for that matter. The Limelight Theatre is another venue for a variety of plays and other productions. Or you might head to the Amelia Community Theatre for, well, community theatre productions.
No matter how you define art and culture, Jacksonville has something to do after 6:00 p.m. It’s time to expand your mind. At www.JaxNightLife.com, we’re helping you learn how to become a little snootier and a lot more refined.
